Our History

The South African Region (formerly Group South Africa) of the IBS was formed in 1993. The Region was formed with a purpose to get members a forum to present and exchange research issues related to biometrics in South Africa. The Region membership grew in number and allowed biometricians from Lesotho, Botswana, Namibia and Swaziland to join as members at large as per the IBS Bylaws.

The Region conducts its’ meetings during the South African Statistical Association (SASA) annual conferences. The Region has consistently held the AGM as per the IBS Bylaws. The South African Region has been an affiliate of SUSAN since 1997 and hosted the SUSAN 2003 Conference in the University of KwaZulu-Natal (formerly the University of Natal), Pietermaritzburg Campus. Currently the Region is a vibrant group with members drawn from across educational, research institutions and government bodies. Several members of the region are actively involved in IBS committees.
